Assignment, "NJ Poverty"

2. According to NJRCL in Essex County, the McAllister family and the Brindle family will not live comfortably, they will be the poor families in NJ and they will not meet their needs. They will always stuggle in life according to the chart of NJRCL, the family like the Brindle, an adult plus a preschooler and school age child is $22.10 an hour without any suppport. The McAllister family, two adults and for children but in this case the other two oldest children live their grandmother and Ms. McAllister unemployed. Mr. McAllister, the truck driver, he's the one that work, this is a family is 12.01 an hour without also any support. This is a family that they will never meet their goals. On the other hand, the families like the Tallingers family, the Handlons, the Williams, the Taylor and the Marshalls will have a better living in Essex County.

3. Both families, the Brindle family and McAllister represent two singles mothers that are struggling in life. Eventhough Ms. McAllister has a common law-husband he is never in the house, I consider Ms. McAllister a single mother. In the LSNJ report, they are consider the poor family in NJ, because both are single mohter of color than non-white. These are two single mothers that try to survive in life so that can support thier children the best they can. They struggle every day such as trasnportation, food, and Health care because according to the chart of LSNJ report the poverty level is 17,600 per year and the wage on Essex County is between $39,299 and $40, 413 that is very sad.

4. The issue about poor families is a topic that will always be on our minds. the best plan for Americans at all income levels is to obtain a quality and accessible plan that would cover all needs at little or no cost. Our country is advanced in many aspects and should continue to provide its citzens with the best care. Americans have the right to choose and make a difference. That right should be used wisely when it comes to one's health and well being. We can not choose our health status but are entiltled to havve quality life style with out inequity of financial status or class.

Inquiry Proyect

In today's society there are millions of Americans who are without health care coverage and how can be affect to the children in school. I have chosen to research and look further into health care issues related to the poor and urban students and families. There are many walls and barrieres families face in providing their selves and children with health care coverage. For most children insurance is depended heavily on parents ability to obtain employer based insurance. I decided to go to the health care center near my hometown Paterson and learn about its services. I also decided to go to school 6, Martin Luther King Jr. in Passiac, to interview one of the teachers.

Interview Questions:

How does health care affect students in school?
Does this affect students learning?
What kind of benefits does the family gets for their children?
How does this affect to other children when one kid is sick in the classroom?
Why does parents sent their children to school while there are sick?

The article is talking about the accessibility and quality of health services for children. It
explains the importance of good healthcare benefits for children and trying to reach those in
need of it the most. It also explains the walls and barriers that are between serving quality
health care for children and their eligibility. The journal describes the barriers people are lost to
insurance companies. The article also goes into explaining what impact these barriers may have
and what they are. It describes the level of children are being affected by these drops and how
they may be reduced.

This journal article is about inner-city women in particular having difficulties leaving
welfare and coming back when cut off. For people who live in poor inner-city areas it is difficult
for them to exit TANF because of the job famine and worsening neighborhood. There are five
groups in Chicago that provide the perspectives on leaving TANF and returning back to welfare.
The reasons for returning to welfare are due to low pay and lack of job opportunities. The
article also goes into explaining the strengths and problems participants have when sustaining
TANF is and welfare benefits.

The article talks about the many troubles individuals face living in inner city areas that
effect health. The article discusses the health of those living in urban areas and the threats to
public health including poverty and pollution. The journal also explains the links between socio-
economic states and health care access reported in the US and UK. The article also concludes in
explaining attempts in Canada to reduce inequities and inequalities in inner city health.

The article talks about the different approaches our candidates for the 2004 election is
into critiquing have on insuring the uninsured individuals and families. The article describes the
three varieties of universal health insurance proposals. It summarizes Bush and Kerry health
insurance coverage plans. The article then goes into critiquing their proposals and explores the
broader concept of using tax credits to purchase individual insurance policies. As a conclusion to
the article it describes physician organizations approaches to insuring the uninsured.

United States Healthcare Quality and Disparities. Journal of Nursing Care Quality. Volume 19

The article explains the national report on the U.S. healthcare quality and disparities. It
describes the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) as the lead agency charged
with supporting research designed to improve the quality of healthcare, reduce its cost, improve
patient safety, decreases medical errors, and broaden access to essential services. The article
also explains the legislation directed (AHRQ) to produce two annual reports for congress, the
National Healthcare Quality Report (HHQR) and the National healthcare Disparities Report
(NHQR) and the National Healthcare Disparities Report (NHDR).

I learned that these reports were the nation’s first reports on healthcare quality and
disparity conducted by the (AHRQ) that were released in 2003. It’s surprising to me that
Congress mandated these reports because it should have been done a long time ago avoiding
bad quality and difference in healthcare. I also learned that the (AHRQ) supports the
improvement of quality of healthcare by developing annual reports, promoting evidence-based
medicine, detecting and preventing errors in healthcare, supporting primary care research, and
applying the power of the computer in healthcare.

This article is interesting to read and find information on how these reports are taken
and documented for Congress. The journal also goes into describing an overview of the
framework, development, and future use of the reports by consumers, practitioners,
researchers, and policymakers. It is very useful in understanding the purpose of the reports and
what information was found in research. It also allows me to see what these reports are looking
for and what I believe should be looked at more deeply.

Final Project

Topic for Research

I decided to do research on health care benefits for inner city, urban, and low income families. I'm interested in learning what benefits are available for low income families and what they provide. I know that there are many health care coverage's but I don't know what is available for me and other families that don't have any health care.
I think this topic is interesting to research because it important to know who is entitled to some or all the benefits health care provides and why. I personally do not have any dental coverage and eye vision. I also make many dental visits and eye visit because have no dental and eye coverage at all. Overall, I would like to understand the system better in terms of low income families and what benefits they and everyone else are eligible for.



Culture has a lot to do with family; however culture seemed to be such a big abstract
blur, something I could not point to out easily nor identify directly. I came from Puerto Rico.
I’m Boricua, which means I come from Puerto Rico, but I was born in America. I was fortunate
to grow up in an urban environment where over 65 different languages are spoken. Growing
up with friends and teachers of different cultural backgrounds and later as an adult in the
workforce, has allowed me to have such a profound appreciation for my culture. While growing
up, I had taken my culture and background for granted, but later on in life, I slowly put them
together. Little did I know that they would be like my shadow, staying with me forever. As a
teacher assistant at an urban elementary school, I am able to interact with students, teachers
and parents of all the different cultural backgrounds and help them with their needs. Naïve as I
was, I welcomed my culture warmly, besides, everyone else accepted it. I did not even feel its
existence until I moved to the United States and experienced being a foreigner. Everything I
have learned, from food to clothes to manners and language was so different that I thought it
was impossible for me to fit into anything. I was so used to strict discipline that when the
elderly treated me more lenient, I felt so guilty. As I tried blending into the new culture, I felt
that I was losing something gradually. I valued it for its influence on my character and
personality. So every day I tried my best in pleasing and uniting my old and new cultures, even
though they hardly mixed.
It all started with my earliest memory, my parents decided to move to the United States
because of the economics reason. My father got laid off from his job and could not find another
job so we came to this country to have a better life. My parents have worn us, my sister, my
brother and me that the people from the United States have a different culture, are too liberal
and do bad things. Therefore, we were not allowed to ask questions to our parents nor we
could not speak for ourselves. Me as a naïve girl, I did not know any better so I was afraid to
come to the United States and not knowing that the country that I came from people were too
liberal and also do bad things. I’m Latina and yes my dad is one of those macho weirdo guys,
and because I am a girl I’m supposed to be domestic and that is big part of the Latinos culture.
My parents kept their culture at home but l felt that I had two cultures, home and outside the
house. I was tried to fit into two cultures in one, “I am sure that my parents were not aware of
that”. However, I did not want to have two cultures, I just want to be me, one individual. I
remember one day while I was walking throughout the hallways of my school or outside in the
playground, I would hear that Puerto Rican are drug addicts, they don’t work, they depend on
welfare. I also heard comments, such as Puerto Rican are gang members, Latin mothers are
slaves to their husbands, and the only job Latin women can have is working as a maid. Growing
up, there were few Latinos in television and Hollywood. Even then, Latin characters were
portrayed negatively. During the school year, I denied my heritage by saying that I was
American. I wasn’t lying because I was born in Passaic. However, I never told my classmates I
was a Latina. I did not lie about my background or denied my race because everyone assumed
that I was either Spanish or Portuguese. When I came back to school from the summer, half of
my classmates were Latinos. They were proud to be Latinos so I started to have a relationship
with these classmates and I realized that that my old classmate were stereotyping the Latinos.
At the age of 20, I was shy, naïve and finds people intimidating. I was never been part of
a gang, never had a boyfriend and never had any self confidence. My parents were very strict
and they would not let me do anything. I felt depressed and I believe it’s because my parents
were over protected. I wanted to feel like running away to give myself a better future of course
it will be hard on my own. They don’t let my sister and I have a boyfriend, they don’t let us go
to parties, and are hesitant about letting me go to any parties at all. They expect me to get
good grades, and do all these things at school, and they always want me to spend my weekend
with them and church. My parents think that 9:30pm is a reasonable curfew. If I don’t make
my bed once, I have to make my sister and my brother bed for three days. They only room we
can eat in is the kitchen. I couldn’t have friends over my house and no sleepover. I remember
how hard it was to get this freedom. Not only that they were strict, but they also didn’t want to
let me grow up. They chased away all my boyfriends and didn’t let me have a normal puberty.
They thought that they were protecting me from getting hurt, but all they did was stopping me
from socializing and growing up. It’s true that I never had contact with cigars, alcohol, drugs, or
have sex with many guys thanks to my parents but who says that I would do all those things if
they were not so strict. When I become a parent one day, I will try to find the middle and to be
At the age of 23, I rebelled against my parents. I left the house to live with my boyfriend
and not knowing that my boyfriend as “machismo”, had the same culture like my father, I could
not accept that life again. I needed to become something or somebody. I needed to find piece
of me. I left my boyfriend and started a new life. I was a road to find myself, without knowing
it a huge piece of my culture. I would go everywhere, no destination was too far. My parents
were like a mist, and a dream, this life make me a queen. One day my girlfriend said to me,
“wanna come to a party?” “A party?, Wow what a new idea this was. However, I was too new
in this new experience. I started to drink, little bit of smoking, not my style, and meeting lots of
guys but no sex, because deep inside I knew that not having sex is part of my culture. I just
realized that I was no longer a child. I am an adult, living by myself, taking responsibility for my
own life, living in the real world. I began my journey to my success. I went to college, as a
young girl, I have always had a passion for teaching. When I was in 1st grade, I enjoyed
watching my teacher make sure all her students learned and felt special. I knew back then that
I wanted to do the same. My love for children will not only allow me to teach them academic
material, but will also allow me to make them feel special about themselves and the community
they live in. I want to be a part of strengthening a child’s intelligence, their moral imagination,
their creativity and their critical thinking. Also, I will teach the future generation about our
culture, including traditions and customs. My children may not have the opportunity to read
about well known Latinos but I will make sure that they will learn about important Latinos
Culture has many definitions, does not begin inside of us. Cultures come from all that is
around us, from all that we see, hear, learn, and reject throughout our lives. This is like my
culture. I am proud to say that I am Puerto Rican. Also, speaking Spanish is very important
because our culture is based on the language. After all, one day the official language of Puerto
Rico might change to English. However, we can’t forget our roots, or where we came from.
Even though I was born in America, I am Puerto Rican. Therefore, I kept myself as an individual.

Urban The Cosby show

It was one of my favorite TV show and still is. This show was about upper middle class African American family living in Brooklyn, New York. The Cosby show is a very good American family comedy. The show follows the everyday trails of Dr. Cliff Huxtable and his family. Which include his wife Claire whose a lawyer and his five kids. The kids cover all age groups and the show confront many diffrent issues the kids go through like dating, death of a pet, playing sports for school and many others. Even though it confront some tricky subjects the show is always funny and shows how funny kids can be. They were good kids and good students. The kids did not represent of any kind of a gang member or drug dealer. Bill Cosby is also fantastic as Cliff and the way he works and talks to the kids is hillarious. It showed people and the tv industry that black people didn't need to be shown as poor and working class to make a good program. There was one opisode that show of Theo having problem with his math teacher that he thought the teacher did not like him. However, the only thing the teacher wanted from him was to study hard and do his best because she belive in him.

Suburban Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Another favorite TV show. Will Smith as a street smart teenager from a tough neighborhood at West Philadelphia who was sent by his mother to live with his wealthy realtives in a Bel Air mansion. His life style was like a rapper eventhough he was living in the mansion. Carlton prepy cousin is a firmly conservative Republican. Two oppisite guys that lived in diffrent live style, one represent street smart (Will), and Carlston a prepy high class guy. Will Smith and his cousin Carlton were attending at Bel Air prep high school. All the boys went to school with button up shirts with a tie, casual pants and shoes. The girls wearing short skirt, button up shirt with a vest and shoes with white socks. I don't remember any problems that the boys may have in school. Hilary, the olderst cousin. spoiled and lack of intelligent that always depended on Geoffrey. Hilary self centered airhead and obsessed with shopping and money. Ashley the youngest cousin was always control by his father so she didn't become anything like a regular teenage girls. Spending time with will Ashley will act rebelliously as she gets older. Ashley lies and drops out of her private school and goes into a public school.

Rural: School Ties

Take place in a rural community in the 1950's. A jewish teenager is recruited by england prep school to play thier struggling football team he is accepted until his religious beliefs are revealed. This film have seemed strain and obvious that if you are Jewish and grew up in the 1950's, you'll relate to it very well. Especially the part about having to violate the Jewish holidays in order to play on the team. A conflict that still arises for Jewish students today.

Urban Community

The ideal family is an image of a mom, a dad and two children, a boy and a girl. Also, a home with stylish furniture and surrounded with lots of trees and of course with a white picket it fence. The mother has a career, but she decided to stay home to take care the children until they grow up. She has the choice to go back t work. The father also has a career and he goes to work everyday to support the family. Unfortunately, when we think about urban community we think about poor people, for example, single mothers, extended family, school, work place, welfare system, and health system. However, there are good people out there that want to fix the urban community so it can become a better community.
Urban Community is a group of people that live in big town or city. Also there are many types of jobs that people who live in urban community may have. Some of them work in hospital or homeless shelters. Some people are school teachers. Many times, there will be a university or college in an urban community, so some people are professors. People who live in urban community are poor, they work a lot and might work more than forty hours a week so they can support the family. Kids who should be in school are standing on the corner, smoking, talking, and doing nothing. Urban schools are dangerous because of the drug dealers. Kids have weapons in school because they are part of a gang member or might be scare of the gangs and want to be protected. According to Troy Vincent, from an article, Work of Heart, "Its worse now." Residents scratch out a living a mid blocks of abandoned, boarded-up, burned-out row houses and vacant warehouse." "Drug dealers stalk these streets; after dark, it becomes what Vincent calls "a war zone." It is ugly, sad."
Do urban teens come from broken homes? Does Bilingual education affect the kid's education? Urban teens get affected when their parents are separated. Therefore, teens hangs out with the wrong people and do bad things. Also urban schools around the country have a huge numbers of students cannot speak English. Also there are not enough teachers that are not qualified to provide language education. According to Whitaker, "Even the state's most affluent school systems have been unable to find all the qualified teacher they need." "The new federal standards are putting more pressure on school systems to hire licensed teachers at a time when their numbers are stagnant." The problems of language and education in urban school are diverse, first language Spanish speaking Lantinos.
Urban education need to be push beyond our understanding, to teach kids what we know, or think we know, about what it means to be urban. Also I want to have the chance to put into practice all of the things that I learned at the University of Montclair. To become it will be an entirely now world to me. I want to watch students to learn and to see how powerful thet could be in their immediate communities. I want to work with students from the communities in which such schools are located.
